Epilepsy and Cannabis

Epilepsy and cannabis is definitely something that’s been used for a bit.  With CBD being used in prescription drugs as a seizure treatment, there is a possibility that cannabis might be the drug to help with epilepsy that people are looking for.

Seizures and Endocannabinoids

For a lot of us, our brains are like a computer, which has a complex set of passageways, like a circuit board that’s there, and was rewired to improve our lives, and our mental skill sets.  There are different inputs that allow for signals to move from one set of the body to the next.

Certain transmitters within our endocannabinoid system help with improving certain aspects of our body, and keeping it in homeostasis

Some of the different things it helps with include:

  • Hunger

  • Sleep

  • Mood

  • Immunity

  • Overall health

The endocannabinoid receptors and compounds found in cannabis can help.

For medical treatment of such, let’s look at CBD in particular. It’s used in the US, is legal, and there are places where it even helps with treating conditions where THC might be criminalized.  This also may be considered better for some when compared to the full-spectrum types of cannabis, as the THC may make one high and the psychoactive elements might not be good for them.

Can Cannabis Help with Seizures

It can.

Did you know that there were cannabis extracts to treat seizures for centuries. Even in the early 1800s, it was used to trat different ailments. But, with cannabis prohibition, it’s something that also has pushed for this type of research to be left in the corner.

But, cannabis research has come a long way, and it’s actually been used as a means to treat epilepsy in children. It is great to help with this, and even the FDA approved this as well. This is something that also has a ton of different trials that were validated, recurring seizures and their occurrence.

How it Helps

Right now, it reduces different sensitivities within specific ion channels.

With the structures of protein connected within one side of your membrane and the next, this can definitely help with treating the confusions that are uncollectible and are used to help treat seizures.

Whenever a person has a seizure, the different ion channels get repeated with these signals that cause the muscles to jerk, causing the patient to be cut off from consciously controlling the motions that are there. through sensitizing these channels, it can trigger different signals, stopping the seizure.

It was also found as a way to help those suffering from Dravet syndrome, which is a rare type of seizure, as this can be a major problem for the development of cognitive behaviors.

Many conventional types of therapies aren’t enough for the patients that are battling this, and many researchers are looking to use CBD along with different cannabis compounds.

One of the biggest ones was Charlotte Figi, where she used medical cannabis and was able to reduce the seizures that she had. She used to suffer many seizures but through the use of cannabis, it helped create some ground-breaking help.

Right now, the research is still early on whether or not cannabis is good for seizures. But with the current studies that we’ve been able to see, and some of the different effects of such, we’ve been able to see the benefits of this.

Cannabis can help with a lot of things, and it can reduce the occurrence of seizures in many, making them much less than before, and it can help with many different ailments that are out there too.
